Alasdair Gold has admitted that he is unsure whether Eric Dier could fit into Ange Postecoglou’s backline even if there was an injury to one of Tottenham’s two starting centre-backs.

Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have been exceptional so far this season and pundits are now starting to take notice of their solid displays.

Gary Lineker even claimed on Monday that the duo are the best centre-back partnership across the Premier League at the moment (Rest is Football podcast).

However, Dier is the only other senior centre-back that Postecolgou could turn to if there is an injury to the Argentine or the Dutchman, with the England international yet to play a single minute so far this season.

The Australian also has the option of turning to 18-year-old summer signing Ashley Phillips, who has made the bench on a few occasions this season while reports indicate that Alfie Dorrington is also thought of quite highly by the coaches at the North London club (The Athletic).

Tottenham need to sign a new central defender

Speaking about Tottenham’s centre-back situation, Gold has now said on his YouTube channel: “We still don’t know exactly how Eric Dier’s going to work in this system if he were to come in. Obviously, his contract situation appears to suggest that he’s not going to be here beyond the end of the season.

“For the future, they’ve got Ashley Phillips or Alfie Dorrington, but that January window, I don’t think it’s any secret and Postecoglou would say the same, that they need to bring in another centre-back.”

If there is an injury to Romero, I have no doubt that Postecoglou would turn to Dier ahead of either Phillips or Dorrington, given the England international’s experience.

However, if Van de Ven misses a couple of games, it is possible that Postecolgou could play Ben Davies at left centre-back, having tried the Welshman in that position on a couple of occasions during pre-season.
