Bukayo Saka says Arsenal have extra gears to use

Mikel Arteta’s men fell at the final hurdle last season after being at the top of the pack for much of the campaign, and Saka has now warned their title rivals that Arsenal are hungry to put things right this time.

The England international told The Sun following his side’s 5-0 win: “There is another level for us to go to and we are pushing. Scoring five goals on Saturday shows we are getting closer. It’s the first time this season we have scored five so we are really proud and happy.”

Arsenal have not been at their best this season but have continued to pick up wins, which is a hallmark of a great side. 

It is not realistic to expect Spurs to compete with the Gunners this season, given that Arteta has had a four-year head start on his project compared to Ange.

I think we can potentially start planning for a title tilt next season once Ange has had a couple of more transfer windows to strengthen the squad.

Every player who has entered the pitch this season has contributed to the 26 points earned so far. So in that respect, it is ultimately difficult to choose just five players who have made a significant impact on the scintillating start.

The ranking of the five players will be based on both on and off-pitch actions, with age and experience considered. There will also be comparisons with the dismal previous season in the cases of the players who regularly started for us last season. Without further ado, it is time to begin the list.

5. Pape Sarr (21 years old)

The signs of an impressive player were prevalent for Pape Sarr at the San Siro in the Champions League knockout game against AC Milan in February. With Postecoglou gifting Sarr a proper string of games this season, the Senegalese midfielder has drifted naturally into this Spurs side.

Pape Sarr’s presence in midfield at his young age is a sublime quality to have. His long stride and tall build is reminiscent of Yaya Toure, and while Sarr is not technically complete, his raw ability has assisted Spurs in midfield. Tottenham’s ability to nullify strong possession-based sides such as Liverpool and most notably Arsenal in the North London Derby are partly due to Sarr.

His standout moment this season was the opening goal against Manchester United in the first home game of the season. The instinct to anticipate where the ball is going in the box is something many top strikers struggle with, accentuating the impressive intuition of an inexperienced midfielder.

4. James Maddison (26 years old)

This might come as a surprise in terms of the goal contributions which Maddison has already made in such a short amount of time. James Maddison was already a superb player at Leicester though, it is just being highlighted at a greater level in N17.

This is not disputing the quality he possesses. The healthy addition of a creative player who has an intelligent read on the game and can make line-cutting passes is more than welcoming considering there has been a drought of that for Spurs for some years.

Maddison has been so freakishly consistent so far this season. Most notably, his two assists in the North London Derby were absolutely crucial to earn a point where in previous years Tottenham would have faulted. Maddison is the missing piece of the jigsaw.

3. Micky van de Ven (22 years old)

There is an overused term to describe central defenders of van de Ven’s ilk, which is the mentioning of a certain luxury car manufacturer. However, I would have no qualms in branding him that. His adaptation to a difficult league has been smooth, and for that, he deserves enormous credit.

Micky van de Ven physically suits Ange Postecoglou’s style of play to a tee. His ability to close down space and use his stature to retain and recover the ball for Spurs is superb. In contrast to the defenders last season, it is night and day.

The most recent game against Crystal Palace was the most impressive for van de Ven, where he was gifted man of the match by Jamie Carragher. He kept the counterattacks to a minimum and remained composed to help Spurs to maintain the unbeaten run. He truly is a Rolls Royce.

2. Heung Min Son (31 years old)

After a disappointing campaign last season, pressure was on Heung Min Son to be Tottenham Hotspur’s main man. The South Korean was handed the captaincy and has transformed the relationship between players and fans already this season.

From the outset of this season, Son focused on improving relationships in the club. The team huddle by the Spurs away end against Brentford is a moment that cannot be underestimated. His off-pitch decisions have been as efficient as his on-field contributions.

The hat-trick at Turf Moor was just an example of the world-class quality which Son holds. A set of fantastic finishes, but the adaptation to leadership and to being Tottenham’s main reliance for goals is what has been the most impressive addition to Son’s locker.

1. Cristian Romero (25 years old)

If you cast your mind back to a game at St. James’ Park near the end of last season, Tottenham leaked five goals in 21 minutes in an embarrassing 6-1 defeat. Cristian Romero started in that embarrassing performance, so the turnaround has been astonishing.

The Argentinian was named co-captain alongside James Maddison this season and has taken responsibility for organising an extremely raw, inexperienced defence. Tottenham currently boast the third-best defensive record in the league with nine goals conceded. It is clear that Romero’s influence and commanding presence are a large reason for that.

Cristian Romero has provided strong and composed performances in every Spurs game so far this season. In terms of a standout moment, it has to be the screamer against Burnley. What should be recognised is the turnaround in defence, and for that, he has been the most impactful player of this season for Spurs.

Honourable Mentions

It was painfully difficult to exclude Guglielmo Vicario and Destiny Udogie, who have also had a great impact on Ange Postecoglou’s progressive style of play.

While Spurs are almost certainly in a honeymoon period, the encouraging start of such an inexperienced team is simply exciting. Ange Postecoglou deserves the credit but it is the team which is fuelling the results have earned recognition.

The biggest compliment that one can give to Sarr is that Tottenham have hardly felt the absence of Rodrigo Bentancur so far this season, even though the Uruguayan was arguably Spurs’ most consistent performer before his ACL injury.

The 21-year-old has formed a formidable partnership in the middle of the park with Yves Bissouma, relentlessly running and pressing the opposition whenever Spurs lose the ball and also proving quite tidy in possession.

What is perhaps most surprising about the Senegal international is the tactical maturity that he is showing at such a young age, with many Tottenham fans hopeful that he will evolve into a world-class player as he gets more experience under his belt.

Does Pape Matar Sarr get the credit he deserves?

Gold admitted that he is quite shocked Sarr is not heralded more in the media, given how well he is performing for the Premier League leaders at the moment.

The journalist said on the Gold & Guest talk Tottenham podcast about the midfielder: “He’s just 21, that’s what I just find so ridiculous about him as well.

“And I do wonder if he was playing for a [Manchester] City, Arsenal, even maybe Man United, just one of these clubs that are slightly more heralded than Spurs are right now.

“Or even let’s say a Brighton because of the talent they’ve produced, do you think everyone would be raving about him? I kind of think they would. He’s almost gone under the radar at Spurs.”

I believe that one of the main reasons that Sarr has gone under the radar is because several Tottenham players have been in top form this season. 

The likes of Maddison, Bissouma, Son, Udogie, Van de Ven and Vicario have all caught the eye, which is why the contributions of a functional player like Sarr, who does not necessarily have a lot of flair, is being overlooked.

Vicario had emerged as one of the best goalkeepers in the Italian top flight in his two seasons at Empoli and unsurprisingly, it was reported during the summer that the 27-year-old attracted interest from a couple of Italian giants over the summer, including Juventus and Inter Milan (One Football).

Tottenham stole a march on Guglielmo Vicario deal

Kelly revealed that a couple of Italian sides hesitated to sign the Tottenham number one in the summer, which allowed Ange Postecoglou’s men the chance to swoop in.

The journalist said on The View From the Lane podcast: “I spoke last night to Daniele Fisichella the Italian football journalist about him and the chances of him replacing the apparently irreplaceable Donnarumma in the Italian team.

Were Spurs one of the clubs to ask about Cambiaso?

Bia has now stated that multiple English clubs tried to sign Cambiaso in the summer but none were willing to meet Juve’s valuation, which stands at €25m-€30m (£21.7m-£26m).

The left-back’s agent told Tutto Juve: “His (Cambiaso) wish came true. That is, to play with Juventus and to have scored a decisive goal.”

“What satisfied him most was not so much the personal glory, but rather the awareness of having brought home the three points. He was absolutely delighted.

“He dreams of winning the Scudetto. Three or four Premier League teams were very interested (in the summer). We weren’t surprised by the fact that Juve considered him un-sellable. They would have sold only against an offer of 25 or 30 million euros.

“He has a long contract, and will still have to work to prove himself. He just thinks about playing and doing well with this shirt, then things (such as a new deal) will come by themselves.”

Given how well Cambiaso is now playing, it will likely take a bid of over £35m to price the youngster away from the Allianz Stadium. I do not see Tottenham paying that amount, given that we are well-stocked with options in both full-back areas.

However, Romano has now expressed serious doubt as to whether Chelsea would allow the youngster to leave in January.

When asked about Gallagher potentially being sold, the journalist told The Debrief: “I’m not sure it will be a part of the January window. I feel like Chelsea want some stability in midfield. I think Chelsea will focus on different priorities. 

“For Gallagher, I’m not sure he will be a part of the January window in terms of a Chelsea exit. The new deal, discussions are not in advanced stages yet, but Chelsea are happy with him, this is something to check again in December or January. 

“Also, Tottenham are not active in terms of negotiations with Conor Gallagher right now.”

It is clear that Pochettino sees Gallagher as an important part of his plans at Chelsea. Tottenham would have likely started exploring other alternatives already but if the 23-year-old does not sign a new contract at Stamford Bridge before January, I can see Spurs testing the waters with an offer.

Gold believes that even if Hojbjerg pushes to leave, Spurs cannot afford to sell him in January given that they will be without two key players during the month.

Should Johnson replace Richarlison at Spurs?

Robertson believes that we will see Johnson coming into Postecogluo’s starting eleven soon and remarked that it would be difficult for Richarlison to get much game time, given that Tottenham have no European football this season.

Jesus Perez may not make Tottenham return

It turns out that Pochettino might also have to be without his trusted lieutenant as Perez could be suspended for the clash.

Pochettino’s number two was sent off for entering Brentford’s technical area to confront one of Thomas Frank’s assistants in the 88th minute of Chelsea’s 2-0 loss on Saturday.

As a result, he has been charged with misconduct by the FA, with the offence being deemed an automatic red card according to the new Premier League rules.

Perez has until Thursday to respond to the charge, meaning that he will be in the dugout for the Carabao Cup clash against Blackburn Rovers this evening but could miss out on the trip to Spurs.

I can understand why some fans feel betrayed by Pochettino’s decision to join Chelsea but I personally feel that it would be harsh to hold that against him, given that he was desperate to return to Spurs in the summer but the club showed no interest in a reunion.

I personally think that the Argentine deserves a positive reception but I have no doubt that he will be jeered loudly by the home support. If Chelsea get soundly beaten, the away dugout would be a lonely place for Pochettino, particularly without Jesus by his side.

Michallik is far from surprised at the 31-year-old’s transformation from last season, admitting that he would have major questions about Spurs if the forward is unavailable.

The pundit told ESPN FC: “I think that’s a massive question for Spurs, because, here we are, we’ll talk about it maybe a little later too, are they better or worse [without] Harry Kane? But think about it. In the past, when one was off, there was one scoring consistently.”

“Let’s not forget Heung-min Son in his last season. Now, it’s Heung-min Son. He’s benefitted from the fact that Harry Kane’s left. But if he’s not there, then I’d have a major question about Spurs.”

This is said to include Tottenham, who are thought to be watching the central midfielder closely, but it is explained that the North London club might put off a move for the player until next summer.

West Ham United and Brighton are also said to be monitoring his progress and it is revealed that Brentford are really keen on signing the Celtic star, although the Scottish club’s asking price could prove prohibitive for the Bees.

The report states that since the Bhoys have lost many top players recently, they are keen to hold on to O’Riley and it would take a club record fee to convince them to part ways with the player.

The publication adds that Celtic expect bids to arrive for the midfielder and are likely to hold out for a fee of around £30m for the youngster.

The West London club were also without Fernandez and Mudryk for their 2-0 loss at home to Brentford on Saturday, with Pochettino admitting before the clash that they both picked up knocks in training and had been rested as a precaution (Football.London).

However, Fernandez has since taken to social media to post an update of him hard at work in Chelsea’s Cobham training ground, which suggests that he could be back for the fourth-round Carabao Cup clash against Blackburn this evening.

By the sounds of it, even if Fernandez and Mudryk do not play against Blackburn, the chances are that they will be ready for Monday’s clash. That is significant as Chelsea are certainly a stronger unit with Fernandez in the middle of the park.

Despite the Blues’ struggles this season, I do not think this game would be a walkover for Spurs as Pocehttino’s men have done well in games against big sides this season where they have been allowed to play on the counter-attack.

The Tottenham dressing room certainly appears like a happy place at the moment, which is evident from the body language of the players on the pitch and the way they enjoy each other success.

The scenes after the full-time whistle are also further evidence of a harmonious dressing room, with the players making it a point to celebrate with the supporters. 

Cynics will perhaps say that it is easy for the squad to get along when results are so positive but there certainly seems to be a big shift in the mood at the club since Ange Postecoglou arrived.

That could perhaps be due to the new leadership group put in place by the Australian, with Son being handed the captaincy while Cristian Romero and James Maddison being appointed as his deputies.

Heung-min Son is the life and soul at Tottenham

Emerson has spoken about the atmosphere in the Spurs changing room, admitting that the South American contingent brings a lot of colour and flavour to Hotspur Way.

The report states that the Lilywhites have been impressed by the Spain international’s ‘remarkable’ showings at Reale Arena and that Ange Postecoglou has given the green light to bring the attacker to N17.

The publication asserts that Spurs are currently in the ‘planning phase’ to present a ‘tempting proposal’ to Real Sociedad for Mendez as soon as the transfer window opens on January 1.

Of all the young players Tottenham Hotspur have at their disposal, Alfie Devine is perhaps the most exciting and promising talents.

Devine became Tottenham‘s youngest ever player and goalscorer when he made his debut in the FA Cup win over Marine back in 2021 (Daily Mail). He was just 16 years and 163 days old at the time.

Given he is still only 19-years-old now, it’s not surprising Ange Postecoglou decided to loan Devine out for the season to gain valuable experience. His new home for the campaign is with League One side Port Vale.

He’s enjoying life there, too, especially of late. Just within the last week, Devine has scored two goals to take his tally to three goals and two assists in 14 appearances for Vale (Transfermarkt).

His latest effort proved decisive in the Carabao Cup encounter against Mansfield, and his manager, Andy Crosby, is clearly very happy with his loan star.

There were high hopes for Maddison when he joined Spurs this summer in a £40m move from relegated Leicester City. It’s unlikely anyone quite expected the playmaker to settle in so quickly, however.

In the wake of Harry Kane‘s departure this summer, Maddison has instantly stepped up and helped to ease that loss for the club. Taking on the number 10 shirt, the 26-year-old has carried himself with all the verve and confidence you expect from a key figure in the team.

His performances and attacking output speak for themselves. With three goals and five assists to his name already this season (Transfermarkt), Maddison has been a talismanic presence for Spurs as they remain unbeaten and sit at the top of the Premier League.

Maddison already appears to be a perfect fit for Ange Postecoglou‘s system, and was even named as one of his vice-captains. Suffice to say, things are going well for Spurs and Maddison so far.

Alejo Veliz is getting minutes for Tottenham U21s

After coming on as a substitute for Wayne Burnett’s men in their clash against Colchester last month, Veliz was handed his first start for the Under-21s on Tuesday.

The striker demonstrated what he is capable of, putting the Lilywhites ahead on 24 minutes, with the centre-forward headed home Jamie Donley’s ‘perfect’ cross.

However, it was a night to forget for the Spurs youngsters as Peterborough emerged 3-1 winners and booked their place in the next round quite comfortably.

Chiesa may stay at Juventus if talks progress well

One name which has been linked with a switch to North London is that of Federico Chiesa. A report from CalcioMercatoWeb just days ago claimed both Spurs and Newcastle were keen on the Italian, and that his current club could be willing to cash in.

But, the latest report from TEAMtalk suggests quite the opposite, with Chiesa due to hold ” crunch talks” with Juventus before the winter window to discuss his future.

The meeting is set to take place in December, and “insiders are convinced that the formal talks are angled towards Chiesa staying in Italy.”

Whatever happens in that meeting, it is now thought a move in January is “unlikely,” and that any transfer is far more “plausible” for the summer, instead.

Newcastle United are said to be wary of FFP when it comes to their spending, while Spurs are not expected to “spend big” in January. Liverpool, meanwhile, are monitoring Chiesa, but would only swoop if Mo Salah were to leave.

Federico Chiesa is an incredible player, and is someone I could see us signing if we finish in the top four this year. I think we would struggle to persuade him to come otherwise, but it’s exciting to consider him in Ange Postecoglou’s system.
