Fabrizio Romano does not expect Chelsea to put Conor Gallagher in the shop window in January, adding that Tottenham are currently not in talks with their London rivals regarding a deal for the midfielder.

Gallagher has had an important role under Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea this season, even having worn the captain’s armband on a couple of occasions, owing to the injuries to Reece James and Ben Chilwell.

However, the speculation linking him with a move away from Stamford Bridge has not quietened with The Athletic claiming back in September that the Blues hierarchy would be open to cashing in on the 23-year-old in January amidst Tottenham’s interest.

90 min even asserted last month that the Spurs believe that they would be the England international’s preferred destination if he leaves his boyhood club in January.

Journalist Rudy Galatti told Tribal Football two weeks ago that Ange Postecoglou’s men have still not given up hope of being able to land the Chelsea academy graduate despite his prominent role at the West London club this season.

Tottenham are not in talks over Conor Gallagher

However, Romano has now expressed serious doubt as to whether Chelsea would allow the youngster to leave in January.

When asked about Gallagher potentially being sold, the journalist told The Debrief: “I’m not sure it will be a part of the January window. I feel like Chelsea want some stability in midfield. I think Chelsea will focus on different priorities.

“For Gallagher, I’m not sure he will be a part of the January window in terms of a Chelsea exit. The new deal, discussions are not in advanced stages yet, but Chelsea are happy with him, this is something to check again in December or January.

“Also, Tottenham are not active in terms of negotiations with Conor Gallagher right now.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is clear that Pochettino sees Gallagher as an important part of his plans at Chelsea. Tottenham would have likely started exploring other alternatives already but if the 23-year-old does not sign a new contract at Stamford Bridge before January, I can see Spurs testing the waters with an offer.
