Son Heung-min has said that while he was frustrated to be substituted against Fulham, he was pleased to see young Alejo Veliz get an opportunity upfront and should have been more supportive.

Son has been taken off quite regularly in the latter part of matches by Ange Postecoglou so far this season despite being the club captain.

Some might have thought that it was due to the forward not being 100 per cent fit, but the Spurs boss clarified last week that he makes the decisions based on what is needed to win matches and added that he will continue to take off the South Korean if he feels it would be best for the side (Football.London).

Son once again got on the scoresheet against Fulham on Monday, producing a well-directed finish into the top corner, which was his seventh goal of the Premier League season.

Son regrets showing frustration at substitution

The 31-year-old was withdrawn by Postecoglou on 82 minutes and he admitted that while he wanted to finish the game, he was pleased to see Veliz getting some minutes under his belt.

Son told Spurs Play after the 2-0 win over the Cottagers: “As a player, I want to always be on the pitch and I think this situation is a little bit of frustration.

“But I think when you see the player coming on, it should be a really happy moment because when you see the player coming on it’s a young lad who is working really hard in training.

“They deserve to play. I think when I’m thinking now I am just regretting it a little bit because I should give more support for them.

“But I think they did a fantastic job to get a clean sheet today as well and I am very happy to see young lads coming on to play in this fantastic stadium.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I believe Ange’s decision to ring the changes in the second half against Fulham was likely influenced by the fact that we have quite a short turnover before the trip to Selhurst Park on Friday evening.
