Tim Sherwood believes that Ange Postecoglu’s ability to bring the best out of players could convince Daniel Levy to spend more on new recruits in January.

Tottenham confirmed the appointment of Johan Lange as their new technical director earlier this week and with that key position now filled, the North London club could perhaps begin drafting concrete plans for the January transfer window.

Spurs need to strengthen several key areas such as centre-back where they are short of quality cover and it has been reported recently that the Lilywhites will also prioritise offloading some fringe players such as Hugo Lloris, Eric Dier and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (The Times).

Sherwood says he would not be surprised if Levy sanctions some extra moves in January if Tottenham are still in touching distance of the Premier League summit when the window opens.

He suggested that the Spurs chairman would have much more trust in backing Postecoglou in the transfer market than some of his predecessors.

Will Tottenham spend in the January market?

The former Tottenham interim head coach told Premier League Productions (09/10/23 at 2:30 pm): “I think the manager has given the board of directors and the head of recruitment a little bit of belief there that he knows what he is doing and he can improve players.

“Before the recruitment looked poor. Players who looked poor are no longer looking poor. I mean Maddison has looked an unbelievable signing and they brought him in.

“Get in there, in and around Christmas time. Be there or thereabouts. The window opens in January. Daniel Levy might have trust in this manager because ‘you know what, I will give you a little bit more money’.

“And they might need that little push to get them over the line. Who knows? This is wide open. This Premier League is wide open.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is a big myth that Conte was not backed in the transfer market. While the Italian might have claimed that Spence was a club signing (he was evidently a Paratici target), he was certainly given the resources he needed to build the kind of side he wanted and failed to get the best out of many players in the squad.
