Football moves in cycles. Despite how concrete some things seems, nothing is forever. In my youth, it seemed that Manchester United’s grip on the Premier League was as permanent as death and taxes.

Fast-forward a few years and Chelsea, injected to bursting with Abramovich’s billions looked to be dining at the summit for the rest of time.

More recently, it is hard to see how Manchester City will be chiselled off the top of the league table any time soon (especially with Pep at the helm).

So it is with my own team, Tottenham Hotspur. We talk about the ‘Tottenham way’ and equate it with being free-flowing and attacking football, but I feel this is too simplistic and quite at odds with my lived Tottenham experience.

Indeed, the ‘Tottenham way’ I have grown up with is actually about interspersing attack minded coaches with defence minded managers and it is such for several generations of supporters.

Sadly, I never saw Arthur Rowe’s ‘push and run’ side of the fifties – nor the football played by Rowe’s acolyte Bill Nicholson. Nor did I witness the flair sides of Burkinshaw, Pleat and Venables (despite knowing all about them thanks to Chas and Dave).

Indeed, I have to admit to being in the crowd, mournfully lamenting ‘We want our Tottenham back! We want our Tottenham back! We want our Tottenham back!” under the turgid reign of George Graham.

Conversely, I was there gleefully chorusing “We’ve got our Tottenham back!” during one of the more hopeful periods in Glenn Hoddle’s time as Spurs manager. Being a Tottenham supporter has felt like a neverending cycle of hope and despair.

Once I looked at the list of managers in my lifetime – it actually is a bizarre pattern of defensive to attacking managers – from the sublime to ridiculous if you will. The reckless abandon of Ossie Ardiles, followed by the more pragmatic, and beautifully mulleted, Gerry Francis.

As mentioned prior, George Graham was followed by Hoddle. Then Jol from Santini and Redknapp from Juande Ramos. After Villas-Boas and the ‘one-man Bale team’ came Poch. In true Tottenham fashion, in 2023 Ange has followed in the steps of Messrs Jose, Nuno and Antonio.

So what can we learn from this? Firstly, that possibly there is no inherent ‘Tottenham DNA’ that is a continuous thread running through the history of the club.

In an era when people love to use buzzwords such as ‘vision’ and ‘culture’ the appointments seem erratic and driven by the individual and not looking to maintain a club ‘brand’. Indeed, the leap from certain managers, who appear to be polar opposites seems incongruous.

Not only that, but the money the club must have haemorrhaged signing specific players for managers whose methods quickly become obsolete is frightening.

But I still inherently believe that if Scott Munn is reading this, and I assume he is. One of his most pressing jobs is to establish what the club is and align it with our deeper history and expectations.

In this moment, we have the most clarity about ‘who we are’ that we have had in years – arguably since 2018. Some may be frowning at that date, but my argument is that by 2019, the team was patched up, threadbare and so stale that they weren’t recognisable as the team that twice went close to the title.

This moment in time is emblematic of where the club need to be better. Just because today is sunny, you don’t sit back with a beer and your feet up and ignore the potential potholes down the road.

If Scott Munn is proficient in his job, he will be creating a profile of what a Tottenham manager ‘looks like’ and already be looking at succession planning.

The old adage is correct ‘fail to prepare, prepare to fail’ – this may as well have been the motto inscribed over the boardroom door of Tottenham in the last few decades. They should be looking after the club, not just in the here and now, but in two or three managers’ time – years down the road.

Don’t get me wrong, this is not just a Tottenham issue. A lot of clubs lurch from one manager to another, hoping to stumble upon the magical formula. Look at the continuing hilarity of what is happening at Manchester United.

At the moment, people will point to clubs like Brighton. An approach was instilled by Potter and now De Zerbi is carrying on and developing that project. They are not the only club to do so, Leeds after appointing Bielsa opted for Jesse Marsch and then Javi Gracia – completely ‘on brand’.

The quandary they found themselves in was when they were looking down the barrel of a gun and facing relegation. Instead of sticking to their principles, they abandoned their DNA and sent up the flare to summon ‘Big Sam’.

Despite the best efforts of Weston McKennie’s hopefully launched long throws into the box, Leeds got relegated; parted ways with Allardyce and returned to their ‘brand’ in Daniel Farke. An entirely predictable debacle.

Therefore, my point is this. If Angeball fails, and it may well do – football is a fickle mistress – let us not oscillate to someone who can bolt the gate once the horse is bolted. We have attacking and possession-based football and the players who can implement it. Stick to our guns.

The poster boy club for this way of working is Swansea City. Since 2007, the managers they have appointed have all played in the same way and maintained the ‘culture of the club’, with varying degrees of success. We all remember Bob Bradley.

Some may churn out the riposte ‘but now they’re in the Championship’, but the truth of the matter is that in football there is no such thing as a certainty, despite how much research is done. Swansea massively overachieved and their scouting hit a hot streak that was the envy of many.

Is Daniel Levy what Tottenham Hotspur need?

So where does our old friend ‘COYS Daniel’ fit into all this?

For many, no matter what he does now, it will not be enough and it will not be good enough. They are entitled to their opinion, but the truth of the matter is that Daniel Levy will be chairman for as long as he wants to be.

Despite the onfield disappointments, he is too good at the ‘other stuff’ to be dispensed of. So what can he do to ingratiate himself or even redeem himself in the eyes of some? To me, there is one word. Legacy.

If Munn and Lange (with Don Fabio still in the background) have been employed on the strength of their CVs, their expertise and their skillset – then allow them to operate in the role they are appointed too.

Almost everyone is united in that we do not want Levy involved with the day-to-day of the club – the minutiae so to speak. If those beneath him want to lean on his experience of seeking his opinion then fair enough, but he cannot be like the ghost at the feast, looming over everyone like a sinister spectre as they go about their work.

He needs to trust his employees and give them a mandate about what the club is and what parameters need to be adhered to the ensure the ‘Tottenham way’ is not a mythological concept but is indeed the foundation upon which this club is built.

There is a possibility that in fifteen years’ time, Daniel Levy will leave the club having learned from his mistakes and I can genuinely say “‘The Tottenham Way’ I know what that is”.

It has long been suggested, but official documents have now revealed that Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy is indeed the highest-paid director in the Premier League.

Since taking over as chairman in 2001, Levy has become the longest-serving in the top flight of English football. His role has not always been a source of positivity, however.

While his business acumen has undoubtedly helped Spurs become a commercial behemoth, Levy and the ENIC group have received mass criticism for the way they have handled managerial appointments and player recruitment.

There were protests throughout the course of the 2022/23 campaign, urging Levy and the club’s owners to sell up and move on. Admittedly, on-field struggles did not help matters last year, and things do appear to be far more positive since Ange Postecoglou took over as manager this summer.

It has previously been suggested that Levy gets paid rather handsomely for his troubles, with the Daily Mail revealing he was paid £3.26m last season.

Football Insider had reported it was likely Levy would remain the top earner among any chairman in the Premier League for this year, too.

Daniel Levy’s earnings at Tottenham revealed

Now, a new report from Football Insider has confirmed this to be the case. Apparently, Levy’s wage is thought to be £3.3m per year, a figure which is “comparable with many of the club’s first-team players.”

Brighton’s Paul Barber is closest to Levy’s salary, earning £2.9m a year. Manchester City’s CEO Ferran Soriano’s wages are unknown, as City are the only club not to have submitted details, but he is believed to be on a high salary.

Spurs Web Opinion

Despite all the issues facing the club last year, it was never likely that Levy’s earnings were going to go down, was it? He earns crazy money, and always will do. And, whatever we think of his footballing decisions, he has made Spurs incredibly successful from an economic point of view.

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie O’Hara has warned that should Spurs lose any one of James Maddison, Heung-min Son or Cristian Romero to injury, it would put an end to any early hopes of competing for the Premier League title.

Tottenham headed into the international break at the top of the table having gone unbeaten in their opening eight fixtures with six wins and two draws to the name in what has been an impressive start under new head coach Ange Postecoglou.

The North Londoners have the opportunity later this evening to reclaim top spot from Manchester City when they host Fulham in N17, where a victory will take them two points clear of the current Premier League champions.

After a difficult previous campaign in which Heung-min Son struggled to find the back of the net and had to deal with injury issues, Romero was also not at his best and did not play at his consistent best week in, week out.

The pair have looked back to their best under the Australian in the early part of the new campaign, while summer arrival James Maddison is already putting his hand up to be one of the signings of the season having taken to life at Spurs like a duck to water.

Spurs must make more signings in January

O’Hara has called for chairman Daniel Levy to back Postecoglou in the January transfer window if they are still in the mix with the title contenders at that stage of the season.

He told Grosvenor Sport: “I think Tottenham’s situation as a squad has definitely got better this season and they have players that can come on and make a difference, but I still think they need to improve in January.

“If Spurs can stay in touch with Manchester City and Arsenal until January, Daniel Levy may look at the situation and realise that they actually have half a chance of challenging for the title. That could make him go out and spend some money on solid reinforcements. Then I think Spurs would have a chance of winning the league.

“They have a similar situation to Arsenal last season in that if they lose a couple of key players to injury they’ll be in a lot of trouble. If they lose James Maddison to injury, they’re finished. Similarly, if they lose Heung-min Son or Cristian Romero, they’re finished. The good thing for Spurs is that they don’t have any European football so there is a good chance that everyone will stay fit.”

SpursWeb Opinion

O’Hara is right to highlight the lack of quality in the squad depth at Tottenham and they certainly are a couple of players away from having a problem on their hands if injuries mount up.

Central defensive cover for Cristian Romero has to be a priority in the upcoming window, along with another forward considering Richarlison continues to struggle to put the ball in the back of the net.

Alan Hutton has argued that Tottenham Hotspur might need to be taken over by ambitious owners for the club to get to the next level and compete with the best.

There has been plenty of speculation over a potential takeover bid for Tottenham over the last couple of years, with The Telegraph even stating last month that Spurs are attracting quite a bit of interest from American investors.

Daniel Levy confirmed in an interview with Bloomberg recently that while he is not officially looking to sell the club, he has a duty to the shareholders to asses any offers that come his way.

The Times claimed last week that Levy and ENIC are expected to demand £4 billion to part ways with the North London club.

It has even been suggested by some sources recently that Sheikh Jassim could turn his attention to Tottenham after his failed approach to buy Man Utd (Mirror).

Do Spurs need new owners to compete at the top?

Hutton praised the work that Levy had done at the helm at Spurs but insisted that now might be the right time for the club to go into new hands.

When asked about a potential multi-billion takeover of the Lilywhites, the former Tottenham right-back told Football Insider: “When it comes to Tottenham and Daniel Levy, the owners have been there such a long time, would there come a point where they think about selling up?

“Probably. The owners have done excellently since they have been at the club, you look at the work Levy has done, it’s amazing.

“Talking about trophies and stuff it could be better. Is the next level for them a move like this? Possibly, to then really go and try to make this squad even better than it already is.

“It will be an interesting one. I think Daniel Levy and Joe Lewis would listen to all sorts of offers and then consider them, especially if it meets their huge asking price.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The growth of the Premier League is nowhere near saturation point at the moment and there is still plenty of scope for the competition to grow, particularly across the United States and Asia.

So, the value of Spurs and other top-flight English sides is only likely to go up over the next few years. So, unless there is an eye-watering offer, Levy and ENIC would not be in any hurry to sell the club.

Sheikh Jassim has now reportedly pulled out of the race to buy Manchester United, and may turn his attention to Tottenham Hotspur instead.

To many, Tottenham Hotspur would appear to be the last remaining Big Six club to not have had a takeover in the modern era of the Premier League.

The ENIC group took over Spurs in 2001, with Daniel Levy being appointed chairman shortly after. That ownership structure still remains in place over 20 years later.

Tottenham fans aren’t exactly happy about that situation, either. The supporters have made their protests heard in the last couple of years after disastrous managerial appointments, poor performances, and inconsistent investments in the playing squad.

It’s no surprise then, that Tottenham has been mooted as a club in line for a big-money takeover. The Times confirmed last month that discussions had been held between Levy and the QSI group in January, but had come to nothing.

Will Sheikh Jassim pursue a Spurs takeover?

Now, according to a report in the Mirror, Sheikh Jassim could be the next Middle East investor to look at Tottenham Hotspur.

Jassim has long pursued a stake in Manchester United, but has now “withdrawn from the race” for the Red Devils ownership. It is said he might now “reinvigorate” his interest in Tottenham instead.

There is a belief that Jassim is still keen to invest in a Premier League club, and his connection to Nasser Al-Khelaifi could lead him to Tottenham’s door. Al-Khelaifi is at the forefront of the QSI group and was involved in the discussions with Levy at the start of this year.

Spurs Web Opinion

I remain adamant that I don’t want Spurs to be bought by a Middle Eastern investor.

Yes, it seems to bring success, but it also brings criticism, moral issues, and in the case of Manchester City, for example, alleged fraudulent activity. Our club is already messy as it is, we don’t need more trouble, we just need stability.

According to Tim Sherwood, Daniel Levy will have to invest in the squad further during the January transfer window if the club are still up there challenging at the top of the Premier League table in the New Year.

No one predicted Tottenham would have such an incredible start to the season under their new manager, Ange Postecoglou. The Australian came in with very little expectations placed on him, in what many described as a transitional year for the club.

After the debacle of last season, which saw Spurs finish eighth in the Premier League, any kind of progress this term will likely be celebrated as a success.

However, after the first eight games, the Lilywhites sit at the top of the table and remain unbeaten. Six wins and two draws, including victories over top-six rivals Liverpool and Manchester United, have helped Spurs enter the conversation for a title challenge.

Tim Sherwood

Sherwood says Levy will need to invest in January

While most pundits and fans still expect Manchester City to prevail come the end of the season, these tentative talks of a title charge from Spurs have got supporters of the club quietly excited.

And, if they are still up around the top of the table when the January transfer window opens, Tim Sherwood thinks Daniel Levy will need to capitalise on that in the transfer market.

He told Sky Sports News (14/10/23 at 2:35 pm): “I think it’s different this year, I really do. I think there are more teams in [the title race]. Tottenham have to be in it, at this moment in time. Why not?

“But if they are there or thereabouts in January, then why can’t they go and invest again? Daniel Levy might have to go and do that.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham very rarely splash out in January, and I still don’t think Levy would loosen the purse strings too much regardless of where we are.

But, if we are still performing well and the fans are right behind Postecoglou, there’s no reason why Levy wouldn’t be inclined to perhaps add one more signing than previously planned as an extra push for the top.

Scott Minto says Daniel Levy got lucky with his decision to hire Ange Postecoglou as some other managers did not want the Tottenham job in the summer.

At the end of last season, after Tottenham stumbled to a disappointing eighth-place finish, the atmosphere surrounding the club was as bad as it had been for a long time.

There seemed to be a massive disconnect between the club and the supporters, which led to protests and social media outcries.

Spurs desperately needed a figure who could unite everyone at the club and restore the kind of attacking football that was central to Tottenham’s identity.

Tottenham appear to have got just that, with Postecoglou managing to completely turn the mood around in a matter of months in N17.

The Australian has instantly got the Lilywhites playing front-foot, high-intensity, possession-based football, which is a joy to watch.

His straightforward responses and his tendency to give credit to the collective in press conferences have also been a fresh of breath air compared to his predecessors, whose messages to the media often tended to be self-serving.

Ange Postecoglou

(Photo by PAUL ELLIS/AFP via Getty Images)

Did Daniel Levy get lucky with Ange Postecoglou?

Minto believes that Levy got lucky by stumbling upon Postecoglou, who is a perfect fit for Spurs.

The former West Ham defender told talkSPORT: “What I would say is, Daniel Levy got lucky in my opinion. Because Ange Postecoglou was about fifth or sixth choice.

“There were lots of people who they were linked to, spoke to – Nagelsmann, Luis Enrique, Slot. Many others. But I just think Postecoglou, whether he stumbled upon it or not, is a perfect fit for Spurs.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is absolutely no evidence that Spurs wanted Enrique or even Nagelsmann. What was clear, however, is that Slot was the club’s first choice in the summer ahead of Postecoglou.

The Tottenham hierarchy certainly deserves credit for hiring the Australian, with large parts of the fan base not impressed with the decision at the time and many quite angered that we did not bring Pochettino back to the club.

According to The Athletic, Daniel Levy’s role at Tottenham Hotspur is about to shift due to changes being made at the very top of the club.

Daniel Levy joined Tottenham back in 1998 and took control as chairman in 2001, leading the club’s day-to-day activity ever since, including the construction of a brand-new training complex and stadium.

However, Spurs have been rather unsuccessful on the pitch during this time, having last lifted a trophy way back in 2008, which has led to plenty of unrest from the fanbase towards their chairman.

Daniel Levy’s role at Tottenham is about to change

Tottenham hired Scott Munn as chief football officer recently, with Fabio Paratici having stepped down following a FIFA ban.

However, with Munn being unable to start work immediately due to his City Football Group contract, it is said that Levy stepped up and was ‘heavily involved’ in transfers in the summer.

The hope was that Munn would work closely with Postecoglou on summer deals, but that didn’t quite work out for the Lilywhites, while Johan Lange has only just joined as technical director.

With Munn, Lange, and Postecoglou all joining in the past year, The Athletic report that Levy’s role will once again change as he allows them to take more control in transfer dealings and footballing activity.

Spurs Web Opinion:

Levy’s talents have always been on the business side of things, so making use of that while also putting football minds in charge of football decisions seems like a win-win for Tottenham.

Tim Sherwood believes that Ange Postecoglu’s ability to bring the best out of players could convince Daniel Levy to spend more on new recruits in January.

Tottenham confirmed the appointment of Johan Lange as their new technical director earlier this week and with that key position now filled, the North London club could perhaps begin drafting concrete plans for the January transfer window.

Spurs need to strengthen several key areas such as centre-back where they are short of quality cover and it has been reported recently that the Lilywhites will also prioritise offloading some fringe players such as Hugo Lloris, Eric Dier and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (The Times).

Sherwood says he would not be surprised if Levy sanctions some extra moves in January if Tottenham are still in touching distance of the Premier League summit when the window opens.

He suggested that the Spurs chairman would have much more trust in backing Postecoglou in the transfer market than some of his predecessors.

Will Tottenham spend in the January market?

The former Tottenham interim head coach told Premier League Productions (09/10/23 at 2:30 pm): “I think the manager has given the board of directors and the head of recruitment a little bit of belief there that he knows what he is doing and he can improve players.

“Before the recruitment looked poor. Players who looked poor are no longer looking poor. I mean Maddison has looked an unbelievable signing and they brought him in.

“Get in there, in and around Christmas time. Be there or thereabouts. The window opens in January. Daniel Levy might have trust in this manager because ‘you know what, I will give you a little bit more money’.

“And they might need that little push to get them over the line. Who knows? This is wide open. This Premier League is wide open.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is a big myth that Conte was not backed in the transfer market. While the Italian might have claimed that Spence was a club signing (he was evidently a Paratici target), he was certainly given the resources he needed to build the kind of side he wanted and failed to get the best out of many players in the squad.

According to L’Equipe (as translated by Sport Witness), Hugo Lloris wanted to leave Tottenham Hotspur on a free this summer but the North London club had other ideas.

Lloris, who has been at Tottenham since 2012, declared at the start of the summer that he was ready to leave Spurs in search of a new challenge (Nice-Matin).

To many people’s surprise, the goalkeeper still remains in N17, with reports over recent weeks indicating that the decision-makers at the North London club were confused that he had rejected a number of offers during the summer, including a couple from Saudi Arabia (Evening Standard).

Ange Postecoglou named the 36-year-old in his Premier League squad after the closure of the transfer window, but it does not seem like he is likely to play for the club again, with the Australian opting to name Fraser Forster on the bench ahead of the former Spurs captain.

Levy made things difficult for Hugo Lloris exit

L’Equipe have now asserted that Lloris thought he would be allowed to leave Tottenham on a free transfer but Daniel Levy ‘saw things differently’ and made the move more difficult.

The report states that the Frenchman himself also turned down moves to both Lazio and Newcastle during the transfer window.

Finally, the outlet adds that the former Tottenham captain does not see any prospect of game time this season unless there is an injury crisis to the goalkeepers at Spurs.

Spurs Web Opinion

I highly doubt that Tottenham would have stood in Lloris’ way had he communicated a desire to join a certain club. It seems like the former Spurs skipper simply did not get an offer that he found particularly appealing.

The UK and Ireland have been successful in their bid to host Euro 2028, and with the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium forming part of that bid, Daniel Levy has been celebrating the good news.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is rightly regarded as one of the very best sporting venues in the world right now. Since opening its doors in 2019, the stadium has not only been the home to Tottenham’s football team, but has also hosted NFL and boxing matches, and even music events.

With a capacity of 62,850 and its state of the arts facilities, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was always likely to be included in the UK and Ireland’s bid to host Euro 2028. Along with Wembley Stadium, the Spurs ground is one of two London venues included in the proposal.

There was a concern, at one point, that Spurs may have to pull out of the bid, however. UEFA restrictions prohibit any stadium with a branded name from being involved in major international tournaments (The Times).

Tottenham have been looking for a sponsor for their stadium for some time now, but Daniel Levy did admit recently that this is no longer as much of a priority (Bloomberg).

Levy is proud to be hosting Euro 2028

With news that the UK and Ireland’s bid to host Euro 2028 has been given the green light, Levy has been speaking to the club’s social media about the success.

He said: “When we designed this stadium, we had the idea that this would be a multi-use stadium. We’re very proud that UEFA has decided this stadium is fit to host Euro 2028… It’s international recognition for the stadium.”

Spurs legend, Ledley King, added: “The European Championships are a big deal… Being the host nation in 1996 had a big impact on me as a kid, and the rest of the country. The Euros will always play a huge part.”

Peray Ahmet, the leader of Haringey Council, reckons this will “put Tottenham on the map” and is excited for “the whole world” to be watching.

And, Tottenham defender, Micky van de Ven has spoken on the decision, too, adding: “When the Euros are in your country, you feel it a bit more. For the kids, it will be a huge thing… it feels like home.”

Spurs Web Opinion

This is a huge success for Tottenham and it will be a fantastic occasion when the tournament rolls around. It is an interesting one, too, in terms of the naming rights for the stadium, which you would assume is an issue that will be put on hold until after the Euros now.

Former Tottenham Hotspur owner, Joe Lewis, will be made to wait until at least January for the next court hearing in the ongoing case of his alleged insider trading.

It was revealed during the summer that Joe Lewis, who founded the ENIC group which controls the majority share of Tottenham Hotspur football club, had been indicted for insider share dealing and conspiracy. Lewis reportedly handed himself in to New York authorities at the time (Bloomberg).

After the Lewis Family Trust was restructured in October of last year, Lewis gave up his share in the ENIC group, and as such, this legal matter will not directly affect the club (Telegraph).

At the time, a spokesperson for Tottenham even insisted there would be no comment as the legal matter was entirely ‘unconnected’ to the football club (Sky News).

According to a report from the Daily Mail revealed Lewis had been indicted on ’16 counts’ of insider trading, but Lewis’ lawyers believed the case was based on an ‘egregious error.’

Joe Lewis trial to continue next year

Now, the latest update on the situation comes from The Athletic, with news that Lewis’ next court hearing will not be happening until early 2024.

The report describes how Lewis is accused of “orchestrating a brazen insider trading scheme,” including the sharing of “non-public information [with] his girlfriend and two private pilots.”

The case has “lagged” since July after it was revealed that another of Lewis’ businesses, Tavistock Financial LLC, had covered legal fees for the two pilots in question.

The pair are employed by Tavistock Aviation, which presents a potential “conflict of interest” and, although both pilots had been paying for their own legal fees, those have now been reimbursed by Tavistock Financial.

Apparently, federal prosecutors have roughly a month to “conclude discovery” and gather their evidence, before the next “status conference” on January 10. This is the earliest date Lewis may reappear in court.

Lewis is accused of “market manipulation” and “misleading filings” between 2013 and 2021. It is suggested the activity allowed Lewis and those around him to “collectively make millions of dollars.”

Spurs Web Opinion

This does not sound good for Joe Lewis at all, and it is hoped none of this ends up having an effect on Daniel Levy or any other facet of the club. Thankfully, it would appear to be entirely disconnected from anything to do with Spurs.

Tottenham Hotspur could be set to appoint a new Director of Football soon, but don’t expect it to be a huge name. Apparently, the club is looking for a ‘low-key’ addition to the current structure.

There appears to be a very clear change of direction occurring for Tottenham right now. With new manager Ange Postecoglou impressing in his early days, things are going pretty well for the North London club, too.

Postecoglou can’t do it all on his own, however, and will now have help from above in the form of his new Chief Football Officer, Scott Mun.

The long-awaited arrival of the Australian will help fill the void left by former Director of Football Fabio Paratici. The Italian had to leave his post in April after being found guilty of involvement in Juventus’ financial scandal.

It seems Daniel Levy still wants to tweak and add to the hierarchy at Spurs, and we could see an appointment of an official Director of Football in the near future.

Tottenham’s new DoF won’t be a big name

In a Q+A held by The Athletics David Ornstein, the topic of Spurs’ plans came up and the journalist was able to shed some light on the situation.

He said: “I’m told Spurs have a plan in place. I don’t have a name but the last I heard the appointment is expected to be relatively low-key – a bit like Postecoglou – rather than a huge name.

“The club will hope the new man fits in fairly seamlessly to the new structure being implemented by Daniel Levy and Scott Munn.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The club is currently acting really sensibly and it is reassuring to hear that everything is seemingly being done with the idea of complementing Ange Postecoglou and his approach to finding success for Spurs.

Tim Sherwood is sceptical about whether Daniel Levy would sanction a move for Ivan Toney in January.

It has been reported widely over the past couple of weeks that Toney is expected to be on the move in January when his ban lapses, with Tottenham named as one of the clubs at the front of the queue for his signature.

This includes an update by The Mirror on September 19, which suggested that Spurs are battling London rivals, Arsenal and Chelsea for the 27-year-old’s services.

The report claimed that Brentford would demand £60m for the striker even though he will only have 18 months left on his deal and that Arsenal are particularly keen on the player, having already explored a deal for him in the summer.

A few days ago, The Daily Express revealed Toney has already informed Thomas Frank that he wants a new challenge in January.

The publication asserted that the Bees were ready to listen to offers for the centre-forward and had already started looking for potential replacements.

Tottenham are unlikely to spend big on Ivan Toney

However, Sherwood believes that Spurs are unlikely to spend big on a player who will turn 28 in a few months.

The former Tottenham interim head coach told Sky Sports News (1:26 pm, September 23, 2023): “I am not sure Tottenham would [move for Toney], based on his age. I am not sure Daniel Levy would pay £50 million+ for a player of his age.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Since Postecoglou came through the door, there has been a definite change in transfer strategy, with the club now looking towards younger talents.

However, they also showed with their acquisition of Maddison in the summer that they are prepared to move for readymade, Premier League-proven stars if the right opportunities open up.

As people begin to speculate about a Tottenham Hotspur takeover again, journalist Tom Barclay has explained why he thinks the interest from Qatari investment groups came to nothing earlier this year.

Daniel Levy is the longest-serving chairman in the Premier League, having taken on the role as part of the ENIC group’s ownership of the club back in 2001.

There has been fairly intense pressure on Levy and ENIC over the last couple of years, with fans seriously questioning the ambition of the owners.

While on-field success has been hard to come by, for whatever reason, the club has become a commercial behemoth. The development of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has helped to increase revenue for the club dramatically over the last few years.

With something of a new era underway at Spurs since the arrival of Ange Postecoglou, there is renewed optimism that success could be just around the corner. Whether Levy is there to see that, however, is a different matter.

Why didn’t QSI buy Tottenham?

Levy recently spoke to Bloomberg about where he stands when it comes to the idea of selling the club, or at least a big stake in the club.

Despite reported interest from Qatari investors like Nasser Al-Khelaifi in the past, nothing came to fruition. Now, Tom Barclay has revealed why that may be.

He told The Hotspur Way podcast: “[Levy] specifically said he doesn’t want to leave, so I think it’s fair to infer he would be open to selling a minority stake rather than a full takeover.

“The fact that, for example, Qatari Sports Investments were looking last January, but it was too expensive was generally what the feeling was, so they moved onto other opportunities, suggests [Levy and ENIC] weren’t really open to selling it unless they got an astronomical offer.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Like it or not, I reckon we are stuck with Levy for a good few years yet. It would take a big offer to get him to move on, and I just don’t see that coming any time soon.

Daniel Levy currently values Tottenham Hotspur at the £4 billion mark, according to a report from The Times.

After serving as the club’s chairman since 2001, Daniel Levy has now held his post longer than any other director in the Premier League. His last few years at the club, however, have been far from positive.

Managerial mistakes and inadequate performances on the field had led to unrest among the supporters, which came to a head during last season’s disastrous campaign.

The ship appears to be steadying to a degree now, particularly since the appointment of Ange Postecoglou has seen performances improve.

Throughout last season, there was ongoing talk of a potential takeover at Tottenham Hotspur, with reported interest from the Middle East. Of particular note were links to Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the president of Paris Saint-Germain and chairman of Qatar Sports Investments.

Daniel Levy values Spurs at £4 billion

Talks of a takeover have gone quiet, but Daniel Levy has now touched on the matter again, and The Times have even revealed his valuation of the club.

In a report from The Times, Levy is thought to value Spurs at around £4 billion. In terms of shares, the ENIC group owns 86.58% of Tottenham Hotspur, while Daniel Levy owns a 29.88% share in ENIC, and it is suggested he would be willing to sell up to 25% of that share in the club.

As we covered earlier this week, Levy recently spoke about any potential offer for Tottenham: “I’ve got no real interest to leave Tottenham, but I have a duty to consider anything that anyone may want to propose. It’s not about me, it’s about what’s right for the club.

“We run this club as if it’s a public company. If anyone wants to make a serious proposition to the board of Tottenham we would consider it, along with our advisers, and if we felt it was in the interests of the club we would be open to anything.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I really can’t hazard a guess as to how long Daniel Levy and the ENIC group will be around Tottenham Hotspur. Levy appears to be in no rush to move on, and he has pretty much weathered the storm of last season and come out the other side smiling, so he could stick around a while longer.

Harry Kane did not rule out future new contract

The Spurs chairman explained that while the 30-year-old did not rule out doing so in the future, the club could not risk the possibility of allowing him to leave on a free next summer.

Levy also added that Bayern conducted themselves well during the negotiation and that he has struck up a good relationship with the German club’s CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen.

Watch the 61-year-old’s revelation below:

Spurs Web Opinion

This does not come as a surprise as it was widely reported in the summer that Kane had refused to sign a new contract before the closure of the summer transfer window but was happy to stay.

I believe it would have certainly been the wrong decision to keep hold of him until his contract runs out and forgo the £100m transfer fee that could be reinvested into the squad.

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has explained the club’s approach to the transfer market, insisting this is not a club that will buy success, but will look to the academy to develop stars instead.

It has been a difficult couple of years for Tottenham and Daniel Levy. Managerial appointments have not worked out, the team have failed to meet expectations, and supporters have been very vocal in their unhappiness with the way the club has been run.

Many fans have accused the ownership of not investing sufficient money in the squad, and when money has been put into signing new players, it has not been used effectively.

Things have changed rather drastically at the club this summer, however. The new manager, Ange Postecoglou, has won the hearts of Spurs fans with his endearing personality and his propensity for free-flowing, attacking football which has seen the side remain unbeaten in the first five Premier League games.

The £86m sale of Harry Kane was an inevitable one, but still left fans disappointed. It remains to be seen how, or if that money will be reinvested in the squad.

Money can’t buy success for Spurs, says Daniel Levy

There is renewed optimism that the Lilywhites can find some success with their new manager and this new style of play. One thing that Tottenham fans should not expect, however, is for vast sums of money to be thrown at trying to win trophies.

Daniel Levy told Bloomberg: “We’re very much a club that believes in the academy producing players that can become hopefully superstars at Tottenham.

“We’re not a club that can buy success. That’s the reality and we have to understand that. And we needed a manager who was completely aligned with our philosophy.”

Spurs Web Opinion

In one regard, I agree and understand where Levy is coming from with this statement. In an ideal world, everyone would rather their club produce star players like Harry Kane every year and win silverware through more traditional methods.

But, in today’s climate, and with the kind of commercial success Tottenham enjoy, we have to make sure we don’t get left behind by other clubs in the league.

When Levy was asked in the fan forum held at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday if Spurs have a buy-back clause for Kane, he simply responded with ‘of course’, without providing any details.

Since then, it has been revealed by several outlets, including The Daily Mail, that Tottenham have a right-to-match clause, which means that they would be able to match any offer that Bayern accept from another English club for the striker.

However, the outlet added that Kane is unlikely to return to the Lilywhites as his relationship with Levy is now strained after the 61-year-old made the striker’s move to the Bavarian club quite difficult in the summer.

It has since been suggested by GiveMeSport that Kane would be open to moving to a different European club after his adventure in Munich or ending his career in the MLS.

Should Daniel Levy have talked about Kane buy-back?

Brazil believes that a lot of variables could change for the England captain and Tottenham over the coming years, which is why Levy should have kept quiet about the clause.

The pundit told talkSPORT Breakfast (20/09/23 at 6:25 am): “Why come out with that if you aren’t going to tell them when it is? What if he (Kane) loves it and stays five years?

“What if Tottenham go backwards? At the moment, under Ange, they are doing well. What if they don’t win anything? He might like the Black Forest down there. His family might enjoy it, so don’t try to summarise it.

“And what if Haaland leaves? Does he go to Manchester City or Manchester United? Or Spurs?”

Just because Levy revealed that Spurs have a clause does not mean he is saying that Kane is likely to return to N17. So, I fail to understand Brazil’s point.

I do feel that the 30-year-old will return to England before the end of his career but it remains to be seen which club he will end up at.

Daniel Levy has said that Tottenham Hotspur would have the ability to re-sign Harry Kane if the striker decides that he wants to return to the club in the future.

Some eyebrows were raised when Levy admitted in the fan forum at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday that Tottenham have a buy-back clause for Kane.

It has since been confirmed by both Sky Sports and The Daily Mail that it is a right-to-match clause rather than a buy-back, allowing the Lilywhites to match any offer that Bayern accept from an English club for Kane.

Daniel Levy is not sure about Harry Kane’s future

The Mail even went on to add that the England captain is unlikely to consider returning to Spurs as his relationship with Levy had become frosty in the summer. This was allegedly because the Spurs chairman made the 30-year-old’s move to Bayern quite difficult.

Levy has now said that while it is impossible to predict the future, the club are very much open to bringing Kane back to N17.

The 61-year-old told Bloomberg: “If Harry, one day, wants to come back to the Premier League and he wants to come to Tottenham, we would have the ability to repurchase him.

“Harry was a great servant to the club, an amazing player, someone that came from our academy, but you can’t look into the future. Who knows.”

This is the sort of diplomatic answer one would expect from Levy but the reality is that it is too early to be thinking about Kane potentially returning to Spurs. A lot can happen in the next three to four years, which could influence the striker’s and Tottenham’s stance on the matter.
